As we continue celebrating the “firsts” that have shaped God’s Vision for Haiti over the past 10 years, today we’re remembering how community outreach began on our campus.

Can you guess what brought people together first?

If you guessed soccer, you’re right! 

From the time our family began living on the GVFH campus, we wanted it to be more than the place where we lived. We wanted our neighbors – especially children and young people – to feel welcome here.

And soccer was one of the first ways that happened.

Over the years, our yard has become a gathering place for countless soccer games, other sports, outdoor movies, mobile clinics, and opportunities to simply spend time together.

But in March 2024, community outreach on the campus reached a new level.

GVFH Christian Academy held its very first Open House.

We weren’t sure how many people would come.

Nearly 400 children showed up – not including the adults who came with them!

Our staff and volunteers filled the campus with educational games, activities, basic English lessons, and plenty of opportunities for children to play and have fun.

But it was about much more than fun.

Our foster children joined the activities. Families experienced a day of laughter and relief during a stressful season in Haiti. And throughout the day, we intentionally shared the Good News of Jesus.

We opened with prayer. Children participated in coloring activities centered on the death and resurrection of Christ. And as they left, each child received a small gift featuring Bible verses to take home.

That day was a beautiful picture of what we want the GVFH campus to be:

A place where our community feels welcome. A place where children can learn and play. A place where families can experience the love of Christ.

And those opportunities have continued.

In fact, as we’re writing this update, our Goodbye Summer event is happening on campus! This year’s event is especially focused on Education & Skills Training and Health & Wellness as we help children and families prepare for the season ahead.

What started with something as simple as kicking a soccer ball around the yard has grown into countless opportunities to build relationships and serve our community.

And you are part of it.

Your prayers and generosity have helped create a campus that isn’t simply a collection of buildings. It’s a place where people gather, relationships grow, needs are met, and the love of Jesus is shared.
